Initiated and sponsored by the Ministry of Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and aided by the NRW Children and Youth Theatre Workgroup, COMEDIA Theater Cologne has awarded six four-month work grants to young theatre makers every year since 2013.

This scholarship programme is directed at young artists and academics, particularly in the areas of drama, scenic design, dramaturgy, theatre studies, theatre education and cultural management. The scholarship is intended to be carried out in cooperation with an independent
children ´s and youth theatre.

The objective of the grant is to provide young artists opportunities to exchange ideas and cooperate with professional children´s and youth theatres in the NRW scene. To achieve this, NRW ´s independent
children ´s and youth theatres open their doors to the scholarship winners, provide insight into their operations and act as mentors regarding themes and content.

After three years of these grants, we would like to conduct workshop interviews to ascertain how successful the scholarship programme has been at reaching its goals thus far. To kick things off, Bettina Milz, Head of the Theatre and Dance Division of the Ministry of Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of the State of NRW, will give a brief description of the scholarship.

Afterwards, former scholarship winners will introduce themselves and briefly present the research questions they investigated or the projects they completed during their grant periods. Subsequently, partner theatres, scholarship winners and representatives of various educational institutions will discuss how this scholarship can serve as an important link between education and occupation in three workgroups.

The workshop interviews are explicitly directed at interested theatres, students and young professionals who have not yet participated in the NRW scholarship programme as well as art education facilities.
